COVID-19

EXPLAINED

Coronavirus - The dreadful virus, ruling the world unimaginably. This virus causes an infectious disease called COVID-19 (Coronavirus Novel Disease - 19).

ORIGIN OF CORONAVIRUS

It is believed to have zoonotic origins and has close genetic similarity to bat coronaviruses, suggesting it emerged from a bat-borne virus. There is no evidence yet to link an intermediate animal reservoir, such as a pangolin, to its introduction to humans.

Retrospective investigations by Chinese authorities have identified human cases with onset of symptoms in early December 2019.

When a virus jumps from an animal to a human is called a zoonotic virus.  For decades these kinds of new viruses have been causing more and more outbreaks (like SARS in 2020).

STRUCTURE AND BEHAVIOUR OF CORONAVIRUS

Viruses are not alive like other organisms they need living cells to survive, reproduce and replicate themselves.

Covid-19 is the name of the disease which causes coronavirus disease 2019.

Corona as in crown, the virus is named for its crown like spikes.

It's spreads through droplets when we sneeze cough or speak and can enters directly through our eyes nose and mouth. The virus can also live on a lot of surfaces for hours. People pick it up on their hands and infect themselves when touch their face, something the average person does twenty times in an hour.

Once the virus enters the body those spikes act as a key, locking on to the proteins found on the outside of many human cells. Once its broken in virus produces the more copies of itself and invading (occupy) more and more cells.

MYTHBUSTERS ABOUT COVID-19

  • The likelihood of shoes spreading COVID-19 is very low

  • The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by a virus, NOT by bacteria

  • The prolonged use of medical masks can be uncomfortable. However, it does not lead to CO2 intoxication nor oxygen deficiency.

  • Most people who get COVID-19 have mild or moderate symptoms and can recover thanks to supportive care.

  • Drinking alcohol does not protect you against COVID-19 and can be dangerous - The harmful use of alcohol increases your risk of health problems.

  • Thermal scanners CANNOT detect COVID-19 - Thermal scanners are effective in detecting people who have a fever (i.e. have a higher than normal body temperature).

  • There are currently no drugs licensed for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19

  • Adding pepper to your soup or other meals DOES NOT prevent or cure COVID-19

  • COVID-19 is NOT transmitted through houseflies

  • Spraying and introducing bleach or another disinfectant into your body WILL NOT protect you against COVID-19 and can be dangerous

  • Drinking methanol, ethanol or bleach DOES NOT prevent or cure COVID-19 and can be extremely dangerous

  • 5G mobile networks DO NOT spread COVID-19

  • Exposing yourself to the sun or temperatures higher than 25°C DOES NOT protect you from COVID-19 - You can catch COVID-19, no matter how sunny or hot the weather is.

  • Taking a hot bath does not prevent COVID-19

  • People of all ages can be infected by the COVID-19 virus - Older people and younger people can be infected by the COVID-19 virus.
