Insulin and Glucagon

Chemical Coordination and Integration

Secreted by Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas; Glucagon (alpha-cells): Hyperglycemic hormone. Stimulates glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis to increase blood sugar; Insulin (beta-cells): Hypoglycemic hormone. Increases cellular glucose uptake and stimulates glycogenesis (conversion of glucose to glycogen in liver/muscles).
